The book Stubborn Twig by Lauren Kessler, is the history of a Japanese American family, largely based in Hood River, starting with the father’s coming to the U.S., landing at Seattle, in 1910. The author charts not only the course of this family’s history, but also the course of Japanese Americans in the United States. It’s history everyone should know about, from the xenophobia and racism to the internment during WWII.

The Yasuis were among the more than 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry along the West Coast who were forced from their homes and interned in vast inland concentration camps.

Yet the Yasuis endured, as succeeding generations took up the challenge of finding their identity as Americans
