From Africa to America: A Journey through Black History

Claude A. Clegg III holds the Lyle V. Jones Distinguished Professorship in the Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies and the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research and teaching focus on African American history, US and southern history, and the history of American social movements. Previously, he taught history at Indiana University at Bloomington, where he also chaired the History department (2006-2010) and served as the associate dean for graduate education in the College of Arts & Sciences and as the associate vice provost for faculty development and diversity.

Professor Clegg is the author of three books, including The Price of Liberty: African Americans and the Making of LiberiaAn Original Man: The Life and Times of Elijah Muhammad, and Troubled Ground: A Tale of Murder, Lynching, and Reckoning in the New South. These works have been reviewed in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, the Journal of American History, and other outlets. Additionally, Professor Clegg has been featured in media venues such as NPR’s “Booknotes,” C-SPAN (“Cities Tour”), and “Charlotte Talks” (the local NPR affiliate), and he has given presentations at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the US Department of Defense, Deloitte & Touche LLP, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., and several universities and academic organizations. Professor Clegg recently completed his fourth book, entitled The Black President: Hope and Fury in the Age of Obama. This work will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press in October 2021.
