Race and Adoption

May 11 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The West Linn Alliance for Inclusive Community is pleased to partner with Oregon Humanities and the West Linn Public Library to bring a conversation to our community on Race and Adoption.

The decision to adopt across racial or cultural lines is a lifelong commitment to exploring matters of race and identity, confronting racism in all its forms, and developing new skills and perspectives. In this conversation, facilitator Astrid Castro will ask participants to explore questions such as:

  • What roles do race, and racism play in your family?
  • What are the personal experiences that guide how you talk to adopted children in your life about where they are from?
  • Where do you need to grow to be the best resource you can be for children who are adopted?

This conversation is relevant to all families in West Linn and Wilsonville where many of the children in our schools and communities are from mixed, multi-racial families.

The conversation will also raise questions of how we talk to children about important issues like race and identity, adoption, and cultural appropriation.

The meeting will be held on May 11th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the West Linn Public Library, 1595 Burns St. West Linn. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
