You may know of Helen Keller, an author and activist, or Gillian Lynne, a dancer and choreographer. Both of these talented women were in danger of marginalization as young girls because of their disabilities. In this film you meet Micah, Naomie, Jesse, Naieer and the families and communities who supported them as children with abilities as well as non-mainstream challenges.
Through their stories and successes, we are led on a thought-provoking investigation of what our world can be like as we strive to empower the autistic or educate those with Down’s Syndrome. We rejoice for the people whose lives were enriched by the wisdom of a young boy with cerebral palsy, and we cheer as a young man is empowered to live independently and become a legally self-directed adult.
How many people young and old in our community are living such empowered lives? Are they in our churches, offices, stores, and neighborhood? How can we become part of their circle of “social capital”?
