White Ally Workshop – Knowing Yourself: Step One to Being an Effective Ally
January 22 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
This workshop is part of a series including:
January 22nd – Knowing yourself
February 19th – Active listening
March 18th – Unconscious bias
April 15th – Microaggressions
Through small group discussions, we will explore the resources we have as individuals to be effective white allies. Knowing what you want to achieve, and formulating a plan for success that fits with your lifestyle is an important first step in the process of engaging as an effective ally.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are the cornerstone reasons for WLAIC’s existence as a community organization. Equitable treatment for people regardless of their race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status is our focus. More often than not, inequitable treatment of a group of people does not neatly arrange into one of the categories just mentioned. Instead, there is often an intersectional relationship between these categories. Racism is a type of discrimination that intersects with many other inequitable practices and policies. People who view racism as a social problem and believe they have an individual responsibility to combat it, are sometimes referred to as ‘White Allies.’
The workshops will focus on how to be an effective White Ally. How to set goals that reflect your situation and how to effectively engage to communicate your views.
