DESCRIPTION:West Linn Alliance presents a staged reading of\nSube y Baja (The Teeter-Totter) by Francisco García\nMon.\, October 14th\, 7:00\nWest Linn Lutheran Church\n20390 Willamette Dr\nFree Admission\n(recommended for age 12 and up) \nTwo children come together at the border to ride a teeter-totter and share a brief moment of joy and heartbreak.\n* Inspired by a 2019 art installation at the border wall between Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico and El Paso\, Texas. \n\nThe U.S.-Mexico border is front and center during this election season. At issue is finding ways to attract foreign labor to support American agriculture and business needs while stopping drug trafficking\, violence\, and illegal crossings. But how can we build relationships and get to know each other as neighbors? That is the theme for the play\, Sube y Baja\, that focuses on just four characters at the southern border: a boy from Texas of Mexican heritage\, a girl from Juarez with from an indigenous family\, a U.S. border guard and former soldier\, and a Mexican border guard who is there “to protect and serve.” \n            The West Linn Alliance for Inclusive Community will host a play reading of Sube y Baja (The Teeter-Totter) at 7 p.m. on Monday\, October 14 at the West Linn Lutheran Church\, 20390 Willamette Drive\, West Linn. This free event is appropriate for youth ages 12 and up and their families. The reading will be directed by the playwright\, Francisco Garcia\, who has cast two local\, seasoned youth actors for the leading roles: Mila Kashiwabana as the girl and Kasey Tinoco as the boy. \n            While the play’s characters are fictional\, the setting was inspired by an art installation that took place at the U.S.-Mexican border wall crossing outside of El Paso\, Texas in 2019. With the aim of drawing communities together\, California architects and designers\, Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello\, placed three pink teeter totters fabricated in Juarez through slats in the wall so that children from both countries could play together and interact. This 45-minute happening sparked Garcia’s imagination for creating a drama about a “real time event” involving adolescents. The border is merely a backdrop for exploring what happens when people are brought together momentarily\, share their dreams\, and divulge personal secrets. \n            Sube y Baja was commissioned and received developmental support by Artists Repertory Theatre’s new works program\, Table|Room|Stage. The short work has had previous readings before audiences\, but the West Linn play reading will be its last before going into full stage production.\n About the Playwright and Director: Francisco Garcia lives in Portland where he works in film\, television\, commercials and theater. As an actor he has appeared in plays at the Mark Taper Forum\, Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles\, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts\, Los Angeles Theatre Center\, Cornerstone Theatre Company\, East L.A. Repertory\, Artists Repertory Theatre\, Portland Center Stage\, and Milagro Theatre. Engaging youth in theater is a passion for Garcia. He is currently a specialty teacher of Theatre and Dance for Portland Public Schools where he supports all K-12 Theatre and Dance programs\, leading trainings and professional development for theatre and dance educators and mentoring new teachers. Now in the midst of co-directing the Portland production of the Tony award-winning play\, Kiss of the Spider Woman\, he will take time out to direct the play reading of Sube y Baja in West Linn on October 14. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Juneteenth: Celebrating Our Stories
DESCRIPTION:Freedom came to Texas on June 19\, 1865\, over two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. On that day\, Union Soldiers arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, and U.S. Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order 3\, declaring formerly enslaved people as free men and women. This day has come to be known as Juneteenth and is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It became a national holiday in 2021 and an Oregon State Holiday in 2022. \nThe City of West Linn is holding its 2023 Juneteenth celebration on Saturday\, June 17\, in Old Willamette\, and the West Linn Alliance (WLA) is participating in the festivities with a focus on storytelling. The WLA has teamed up with the West Linn Public Library and the Oregon Historical Society to record the stories of residents of all backgrounds and beliefs as a way of preserving our collective heritage for future generations. Topics to talk about\, as an individual or in conversation with a family member or friend\, may be focused on an understanding of the Juneteenth holiday – or on people\, places\, and events in West Linn that have been special in some way. Stories will be recorded by a professional audiographer\, with one copy going to you and a second copy permanently filed in the Local History Collection at the West Linn Public Library for public access. Only 12 recording slots are available\, so reservations are recommended. \nDate/Time: June 17\, 11:00am-3:00pm \nRecording Booth Location: Lower level at 1609 Willamette Falls Drive \nRecording Sessions: Recordings will take place 11:00 AM-2:40 PM in 20-minute sessions. Tracey Lam\, APR\, is an award-winning public relations professional who uses communications as a catalyst for diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. She is the director of programs and communications at Partners in Diversity\, a nonproft organization that works with employers to enhance diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in the workplace. Tracey enjoys helping her community in varied ways. In 2014\, she co-founded API Forward\, a volunteer-run nonproft dedicated to the education\, leadership development\, and advancement of Asians and Pacific Islanders. DESCRIPTION:The online discussion has been cancelled\, but we encourage you to read the book on your own. \nCeremony by Leslie Marmon Silko\nTayo\, a young Native American\, has been a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II\, and the horrors of captivity have almost eroded his will to survive. His return to the Laguna Pueblo reservation only increases his feeling of estrangement and alienation. While other returning soldiers find easy refuge in alcohol and senseless violence\, Tayo seeks for another kind of comfort and resolution. Tayo’s quest leads him back to Indian traditions\, to beliefs about witchcraft and evil\, and to the ancient stories of his people. The search itself becomes a ritual\, a curative ceremony that defeats the most virulent of afflictions – despair. \nThe West Linn Public Library has copies of the book.

The topic is: \n\n\n\nWhat It Takes to Migrate \nRegistration Link: https://calendly.com/wlpl-programs/wla-sep-2022 \n\n\n\nNot every refugee fleeing violence in Central America gains asylum in the U.S. The work of several U.S. attorneys involved in providing legal support to asylum seekers is documented in a new film\, Las Abogadas: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis. (West Coast premiere is at the Portland Film Festival this October.) Learn firsthand from the attorneys and the film’s producer about one migrant family’s quest for safety. Discussion follows. \nHere is a link to the trailer of the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLafqoDcJF8 \n\nAbout the Speakers \nRebecca Eichler has over 20 years of experience practicing immigration law in the Washington DC area and providing disaster legal aid around the world\, working with clients seeking protection under U.S. and international law. In fall 2018\, she spearheaded central Mexico’s legal aid response to the migrant caravans\, providing individual consultations and know-your-rights presentations to hundreds of migrants on what to expect at the border. She currently lives and works in Mexico as a human rights advocate\, advising deportees from the U.S\, migrants in transit\, and asylum seekers at the U.S. border. Her work is documented in the film. \nCareen Shannon\, executive producer of the film\, is an attorney\, writer\, and former law professor who has focused on U.S. immigration law and policy for nearly 30 years. She is the co-author of several books\, and the author of hundreds of articles\, about immigration law and global migration. She has made numerous trips to the U.S.-Mexico border to provide pro bono legal services to immigrant families held by the U.S. government in detention camps in New Mexico and Texas. She also sits on the Board of Directors of Safe Passage Project\, a New York-based nonprofit that provides free lawyers to immigrant youth\, as well as the Latin American Relief Fund which supports Albergue ABBA\, a migrant shelter in central Mexico. \nLaura Seltzer-Dunn\, social impact producer for the film\, produces social issue and historical documentaries featuring unsung heroes and the people they help. Laura has produced many stories about migration\, the plight of refugees\, and their efforts to resettle. She is an award-winning PBS documentary and educational filmmaker. With her latest PBS film\, Nobody Wants Us\, about Holocaust refugees\, she has taken outreach and audience engagement to a new level\, creating a robust social impact strategy that includes nonprofit\, film festival\, and university screenings\, as well as the creation of a middle school curriculum.

DESCRIPTION:The West Linn Alliance\, in partnership with the West Linn Public Library\, is pleased to host a discussion on Resolving Hate in America. \nLocation: Online \nEvent Registration: https://calendly.com/wlpl-programs/resolving?month=2022-06 \nDate: June 23\, 7:00-8:30 pm \nWeek after week we witness more massacres of Americans in shopping malls\, grocery stores\, places of worship\, streets\, and schools. \nLast June\, Attorney General Merrick Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas told the Senate that the greatest domestic threat is homegrown terrorism from “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists\,” specifically white supremacists. Last September\, FBI Director Christopher Wray told a Senate committee that “lone actors” are our greatest threat. The most recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center\, tracking over 1\,600 U.S. hate groups\, states that the extremist ideas mobilizing these groups “now operate more openly in the political mainstream.” \nSo how can we resolve some of this hatred and violence and restore a modicum of civility? \nWe have much to learn from the life story of German-born\, former neo-Nazi TM Garret\, who now lives in Memphis. In a 2021 interview with C-SPAN host Bill Scanian\, he explains why he got involved with white supremacists\, why he turned away\, and how he is now dedicating his life to helping people move out of the rut of hatred. DESCRIPTION:This free online workshop\, co-sponsored by the West Linn Alliance and the West Linn Public Library\, focuses on our perception of others\, some of which is rooted in our biology and some of which is rooted in our cultural experience. Through mindful writing and other activities\, we will come to know more about our encounters with “the other” and experiences of being viewed as “the other” in a creative\, safe zone. \nRegistration is required for planning purposes: REGISTER \n\nAbout the Facilitator\nTamara Gilbert\, owner of Creative Openings\, is an expressive arts facilitator and communications consultant. A Brown University graduate\, Ms. Gilbert earned her MA in Dance Ethnology from UCLA. She has taught dance/movement for over 20 years and has earned numerous awards for her creative work in the field of environmental communications. Since graduating from Tamalpa Institute\, Ms. Gilbert uses a holistic approach to expressive arts to help groups tap into their creativity and build community.

Despite decades of social justice movements\, police brutality and divisions persist in the United States. COVID-19 has only added more challenges. How can we connect to each other during these times? What holds us back from connecting with each other? How do our personal experiences contribute to barriers\, or have the potential to break them down? Join facilitator Chisao Hata as she holds space to examine individual questions on race\, cultural values\, and what brings us together and what separates us.

Distinguished historian John H. Bracey Jr.\, professor in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst since 1972\, offers a provocative analysis of the devastating economic\, political\, and social effects of racism on white Americans. Focusing beyond white power and privilege\, Bracey turns his lens on the high price that white people\, especially working-class whites\, have paid for more than two centuries of divisive race-based policies and attitudes. \nThis includes: \n\nthe pivotal role slavery played in the American Revolution\,\nthe two million white Americans who died in a civil war fought over the question of slavery\,\nhow business owners took advantage of the segregation of America’s first labor unions and used low-wage\, non-unionized black workers to undercut the bargaining power of white workers\,\nand why Americans do not enjoy the benefits of a national health care system as other European countries have for over a century.\n\nBracey’s key theme is that failing to acknowledge the centrality of racism not only minimizes the suffering of black people\, but also blinds us to how white people have been harmed as well. Well-chosen historical imagery underscores the film’s compelling narrative. A central question for the film discussion is How can our society learn from the past and move toward a more equitable future?

This is at a time when we are seeing an alarming rise in antisemitic incidents and hate crimes in the United States. Education about antisemitism is therefore essential. This workshop will explore what antisemitism is (and what it is not)\, how it has evolved over time\, and how it is being normalized in America. It will also delve into the reasons why antisemitism is often overlooked or even dismissed by those working in the area of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI). \n\n\nBob Horenstein has served as Director of Community Relations of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland since 1994. In this role\, Horenstein has directed the Federation’s efforts to safeguard the social safety net\, promote civil rights\, combat hate and bigotry\, and strengthen the local community’s ties to Israel. He is also a freelance writer\, having been published in the Oregonian\, Jerusalem Post and The Forward\, and is a regular contributor to the Jerusalem Report\, an English-language bimonthly Israeli magazine. Horenstein has been awarded the American Jewish Press Association Louis Rapoport Award for Excellence in Commentary\, and he was recognized by the Oregon Society of Professional Journalists for Excellence in Journalism. He is a frequent speaker at local synagogues\, churches\, and schools and has lectured\, among other places\, in Juneau\, Alaska; Springfield\, Illinois; Vancouver\, BC; and at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Horenstein earned a Master’s degree in political science\, specializing in Arab-Israeli politics\, from Portland State University in 1993. He is married to his wife Dorice\, with whom he has a daughter and two sons.
