DESCRIPTION:West Linn Alliance presents a staged reading of\nSube y Baja (The Teeter-Totter) by Francisco García\nMon.\, October 14th\, 7:00\nWest Linn Lutheran Church\n20390 Willamette Dr\nFree Admission\n(recommended for age 12 and up) \nTwo children come together at the border to ride a teeter-totter and share a brief moment of joy and heartbreak.\n* Inspired by a 2019 art installation at the border wall between Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico and El Paso\, Texas. \n\nThe U.S.-Mexico border is front and center during this election season. At issue is finding ways to attract foreign labor to support American agriculture and business needs while stopping drug trafficking\, violence\, and illegal crossings. But how can we build relationships and get to know each other as neighbors? That is the theme for the play\, Sube y Baja\, that focuses on just four characters at the southern border: a boy from Texas of Mexican heritage\, a girl from Juarez with from an indigenous family\, a U.S. border guard and former soldier\, and a Mexican border guard who is there “to protect and serve.” \n            The West Linn Alliance for Inclusive Community will host a play reading of Sube y Baja (The Teeter-Totter) at 7 p.m. on Monday\, October 14 at the West Linn Lutheran Church\, 20390 Willamette Drive\, West Linn. This free event is appropriate for youth ages 12 and up and their families. The reading will be directed by the playwright\, Francisco Garcia\, who has cast two local\, seasoned youth actors for the leading roles: Mila Kashiwabana as the girl and Kasey Tinoco as the boy. \n            While the play’s characters are fictional\, the setting was inspired by an art installation that took place at the U.S.-Mexican border wall crossing outside of El Paso\, Texas in 2019. With the aim of drawing communities together\, California architects and designers\, Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello\, placed three pink teeter totters fabricated in Juarez through slats in the wall so that children from both countries could play together and interact. This 45-minute happening sparked Garcia’s imagination for creating a drama about a “real time event” involving adolescents. The border is merely a backdrop for exploring what happens when people are brought together momentarily\, share their dreams\, and divulge personal secrets. \n            Sube y Baja was commissioned and received developmental support by Artists Repertory Theatre’s new works program\, Table|Room|Stage. The short work has had previous readings before audiences\, but the West Linn play reading will be its last before going into full stage production.\n About the Playwright and Director: Francisco Garcia lives in Portland where he works in film\, television\, commercials and theater. As an actor he has appeared in plays at the Mark Taper Forum\, Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles\, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts\, Los Angeles Theatre Center\, Cornerstone Theatre Company\, East L.A. Repertory\, Artists Repertory Theatre\, Portland Center Stage\, and Milagro Theatre. Engaging youth in theater is a passion for Garcia. He is currently a specialty teacher of Theatre and Dance for Portland Public Schools where he supports all K-12 Theatre and Dance programs\, leading trainings and professional development for theatre and dance educators and mentoring new teachers. Now in the midst of co-directing the Portland production of the Tony award-winning play\, Kiss of the Spider Woman\, he will take time out to direct the play reading of Sube y Baja in West Linn on October 14. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The West Linn Alliance is pleased to partner with Oregon Humanities and the West Linn Public Library to bring a conversation on Housing and Belonging to the West Linn Library on March 23\, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. \nHousing and homelessness is a visible and divisive issue in local media\, in politics\, and across different communities within our state. Many Oregonians were experiencing housing instability and economic uncertainty even during the “boom” times before the current crisis. This conversation will explore common assumptions and perspectives about the experience of houselessness/homelessness and seek to answer the question\, How do we decide who “belongs” in our community? \nOur facilitator will be Paul Susi\, a theater artist\, social services professional\, educator\, and community activist born and raised in Portland. From 2015 to 2020\, Paul worked as a lead shelter host\, shift supervisor\, and ultimately manager for six successive Transition Projects shelters\, specializing in opening and establishing best practices for new emergency homeless shelters throughout the Portland area. \nSee the Event Flyer \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Mary’s Woods Annual Martin Luther King celebration will be held on Saturday January 13 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of the Holy Names (17400 Holy Names Drive\, Lake Oswego). The guest speaker is Hezekiah Watkins. \nOn July 7\, 1961\, at age 13\, Hezekiah Watkins was the youngest person arrested in Jackson\, Mississippi during the Freedom Rides for a “breach of peace.” He soon found himself on Death Row at Parchman Penitentiary\, possibly the worst prison in the United States. Learning from Civil Rights leaders James Bevel\, David Dennis and Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer\, Watkins continued his fight for civil rights and justice in Mississippi while being arrested over 100 times. \nToday he works with the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in his hometown of Jackson\, bringing awareness that the struggle for justice continues. \nAlso the NW Freedom Singers will return to this year’s event. \n

SUMMARY:Juneteenth: Celebrating Our Stories
DESCRIPTION:Freedom came to Texas on June 19\, 1865\, over two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. On that day\, Union Soldiers arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, and U.S. Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order 3\, declaring formerly enslaved people as free men and women. This day has come to be known as Juneteenth and is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It became a national holiday in 2021 and an Oregon State Holiday in 2022. \nThe City of West Linn is holding its 2023 Juneteenth celebration on Saturday\, June 17\, in Old Willamette\, and the West Linn Alliance (WLA) is participating in the festivities with a focus on storytelling. The WLA has teamed up with the West Linn Public Library and the Oregon Historical Society to record the stories of residents of all backgrounds and beliefs as a way of preserving our collective heritage for future generations. Topics to talk about\, as an individual or in conversation with a family member or friend\, may be focused on an understanding of the Juneteenth holiday – or on people\, places\, and events in West Linn that have been special in some way. Stories will be recorded by a professional audiographer\, with one copy going to you and a second copy permanently filed in the Local History Collection at the West Linn Public Library for public access. Only 12 recording slots are available\, so reservations are recommended. \nDate/Time: June 17\, 11:00am-3:00pm \nRecording Booth Location: Lower level at 1609 Willamette Falls Drive \nRecording Sessions: Recordings will take place 11:00 AM-2:40 PM in 20-minute sessions. This polarization is so extreme that it often seems like the two sides may have completely different experiences of the world. \nJoin facilitator Nick Nash in a conversation that asks\, How does the urban/rural divide affect the ways we relate to each other as Oregonians? What is the urban/rural divide\, and how do we understand it? How does this divide affect our day-to-day lives\, our experiences of being governed and of the COVID-19 pandemic? This conversation is a chance to reflect on the beliefs we have about our urban or rural neighbors with a focus on discovering and abandoning misbeliefs\, investigating and learning about the real differences between the urban and the rural\, and trying to find things that we all share as Oregonians. \nNick Nash lives in Pendleton\, Oregon\, where he teaches philosophy at Blue Mountain Community College and works as a community development consultant for Eastern Oregon Business Source. He and his wife\, Rachel\, moved back to northeastern Oregon after living outside the area for fifteen years.

DESCRIPTION:Interrupting Contemporary Antisemitism: What Can We Do About It? \n\n\nMay 4 |  7pm | Congregation Beth Israel and online\n\n\n\nAntisemitic bias crimes and incidents have increased in Oregon and across the nation in the last few years. From conspiracy theories about COVID to violent attacks on synagogues\, Jewish communities are facing a new wave of threat to their safety and security. But what is the appropriate response to this form of virulent hatred that ultimately harms all communities? This event looks at the hurt caused by this new wave of anti-Jewish bias\, while focusing on practical skills to de-escalate potentially violent conflicts\, both online and in physical spaces. The assembled panel will discuss the current information on trends and patterns of antisemitism\, its impact on the local Jewish community\, social forces driving the increase in attacks\, and conflict resolution skills to successfully confront antisemitism. Panelists: Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana (Congregation Beth Israel)\,  Stephen Paolini (ADL – PNW)\, Dr. Randall Blazak (Coalition Against Hate Crimes)\, and Ryan Nakade (Cure-PDX). \n  \n\n\nRSVP for Interrupting Contemporary Antisemitism\n\n  \nAbout the Panelists \n\n\nRandall Blazak has been the chair of Oregon’s Coalition Against Hate Crimes since 2002 and is a globally recognized expert on bias crimes and extremism. Blazak earned his PhD at Emory University in 1995 after completing an extensive field study of racist skinheads that included undercover observations and interviews across the world. He became a tenured sociology professor at Portland State University and currently teaches sociology classes at the University of Oregon and Portland Community College. He serves as the vice-chair of Oregon’s Department of Justice Steering Committee on Bias Crimes and Incidents and is a subject matter expert on a federally funded grant to develop community based responses to violent extremism.\n\n\n\nRabbi Michael Z. Cahana joined Congregation Beth Israel in 2006. He is highly engaged in social action\, embracing the concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) to make our community and nation better. He serves on the leadership team of Lift Every Voice Oregon\, and interfaith movement to pass gun safety legislation in Oregon. He also is on the Board of Cedar Sinai Park and an at-large member of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland.\n\n\n\nRyan Nakade\, is a conflict mediator and facilitator. He works as a consultant for the Cure-PDX project\, where he leads trainings on dialogue skills to bridge divides and disrupt toxic polarization. He lives in Toledo\, WA with his wife and nine goats. \n\n\n\nStephen Paolini is the Associate Regional Director of ADL in the Pacific Northwest. His work involves responding to incidents of hate and bias\, working with law enforcement to provide training on hate crimes and extremism\, and leading efforts to pass legislation at the state\, regional\, and local level. Prior to working at ADL Stephen led efforts in Washington State to address gun violence on the ballot and in the state legislature\, including a 2018 effort that regulated assault rifles statewide. He serves on the board of Community Passageways\, a restorative justice organization that helps divert youth from the criminal justice system.

Thompson\, in conversation with Dr. Darrell Millner\nThursday\, April 6\, 2023\, at 5:30pm\nAt the Oregon Historical Society\, Portland\nFree and open to the public \nRegister Here \nThe Making of American Whiteness: The Formation of Race in Seventeenth-Century Virginia changes the narrative about the origins of race and Whiteness in America. With an exhaustive range of archival documents\, Carmen P. Thompson demonstrates not only that Whiteness predates European expansion to the Americas — as evidenced by European participation in the transatlantic slave trade since the fifteenth century — but\, more importantly\, that Whiteness was the principal dynamic in the settlement of Virginia\, the first colony in what would become the United States of America. Just as the system of White supremacy was the principal order that fueled the transatlantic slave trade\, it was likewise the framework that drove the organization of civil society in Virginia\, including the organization and structure of the colony’s laws; its social\, political\, and economic policies; and its system of governance. This book shows what Whiteness looked like in everyday life in the early seventeenth century\, finding it eerily predictive to Whiteness today. \nDoors will open at 5:30pm\, and a short program will begin at 6pm. This year the Min Yasui Day program is scheduled for Saturday\, April 1\, from 1 to 3 pm. In person at the White Stag Building (70 NW Couch Street\, Portland) and streaming live on YouTube. \nThis year’s program will feature \n➢ The Man: Reflections from Dr. Homer Yasui\, Honorary Chair of the Min Yasui Legacy Project and historian extraordinaire. \n➢ His Work: Reflections from Dr. Robin Yasui\, Minoru Yasui’s niece\, on Min’s life work as a Colorado attorney addressing injustice across all populations. In addition to the Asian population for which he is most well-known\, he advocated for the rights of women and LGBTQ community\, Native and African Americans\, Jews\, and Latinos. \n➢ His Legacy Today Panel (with Jessica Asai\, Weston Koyama\, and Anna Reutin): The importance and relevance of Min’s work across generations\, from high school to social justice lawyers. \n➢ Behind These Bars: Dedication of the jail cell where Min spent nine months in solitary confinement fighting for justice for all Americans. While these bars could not confine Min’s spirit\, the arduous journey of the cell from the Multnomah County Courthouse to its permanent resting place at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon in Portland symbolizes Min’s life work and how this spirit of an extraordinary activist was strengthened rather than diminished by confinement.
