Thompson\, in conversation with Dr. Darrell Millner\nThursday\, April 6\, 2023\, at 5:30pm\nAt the Oregon Historical Society\, Portland\nFree and open to the public \nRegister Here \nThe Making of American Whiteness: The Formation of Race in Seventeenth-Century Virginia changes the narrative about the origins of race and Whiteness in America. With an exhaustive range of archival documents\, Carmen P. Thompson demonstrates not only that Whiteness predates European expansion to the Americas — as evidenced by European participation in the transatlantic slave trade since the fifteenth century — but\, more importantly\, that Whiteness was the principal dynamic in the settlement of Virginia\, the first colony in what would become the United States of America. Just as the system of White supremacy was the principal order that fueled the transatlantic slave trade\, it was likewise the framework that drove the organization of civil society in Virginia\, including the organization and structure of the colony’s laws; its social\, political\, and economic policies; and its system of governance. This book shows what Whiteness looked like in everyday life in the early seventeenth century\, finding it eerily predictive to Whiteness today. \nDoors will open at 5:30pm\, and a short program will begin at 6pm. DESCRIPTION:In 2016 Oregon’s legislature designated March 28 Minoru Yasui Day to honor the state’s only Presidential Medal of Freedom awardee’s tireless fight for equality\, justice\, democracy\, and civil rights. This year the Min Yasui Day program is scheduled for Saturday\, April 1\, from 1 to 3 pm. In person at the White Stag Building (70 NW Couch Street\, Portland) and streaming live on YouTube. \nThis year’s program will feature \n➢ The Man: Reflections from Dr. Homer Yasui\, Honorary Chair of the Min Yasui Legacy Project and historian extraordinaire. \n➢ His Work: Reflections from Dr. Robin Yasui\, Minoru Yasui’s niece\, on Min’s life work as a Colorado attorney addressing injustice across all populations. In addition to the Asian population for which he is most well-known\, he advocated for the rights of women and LGBTQ community\, Native and African Americans\, Jews\, and Latinos. \n➢ His Legacy Today Panel (with Jessica Asai\, Weston Koyama\, and Anna Reutin): The importance and relevance of Min’s work across generations\, from high school to social justice lawyers. \n➢ Behind These Bars: Dedication of the jail cell where Min spent nine months in solitary confinement fighting for justice for all Americans. While these bars could not confine Min’s spirit\, the arduous journey of the cell from the Multnomah County Courthouse to its permanent resting place at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon in Portland symbolizes Min’s life work and how this spirit of an extraordinary activist was strengthened rather than diminished by confinement. She is a U.S. legal and political historian interested in the histories of immigration\, citizenship\, nationalism\, and the Chinese diaspora. Her latest book\, The Chinese Question: The Gold Rushes and Global Politics\, was winner of the 2022 Bancroft Prize. This distinguished history of the Chinese diaspora and global capitalism chronicles how a feverish alchemy of race and money brought Chinese people to the West and reshaped the nineteenth century. Drawing on ten years of research across five continents\, Ngai narrates the story of the thousands of Chinese who left their homeland in pursuit of gold and how they formed communities and organizations to help navigate their perilous new world. (West Coast premiere is at the Portland Film Festival this October.) Learn firsthand from the attorneys and the film’s producer about one migrant family’s quest for safety. Discussion follows. \nHere is a link to the trailer of the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLafqoDcJF8 \n\nAbout the Speakers \nRebecca Eichler has over 20 years of experience practicing immigration law in the Washington DC area and providing disaster legal aid around the world\, working with clients seeking protection under U.S. and international law. In fall 2018\, she spearheaded central Mexico’s legal aid response to the migrant caravans\, providing individual consultations and know-your-rights presentations to hundreds of migrants on what to expect at the border. She currently lives and works in Mexico as a human rights advocate\, advising deportees from the U.S\, migrants in transit\, and asylum seekers at the U.S. border. Her work is documented in the film. \nCareen Shannon\, executive producer of the film\, is an attorney\, writer\, and former law professor who has focused on U.S. immigration law and policy for nearly 30 years. She is the co-author of several books\, and the author of hundreds of articles\, about immigration law and global migration. She has made numerous trips to the U.S.-Mexico border to provide pro bono legal services to immigrant families held by the U.S. government in detention camps in New Mexico and Texas. She also sits on the Board of Directors of Safe Passage Project\, a New York-based nonprofit that provides free lawyers to immigrant youth\, as well as the Latin American Relief Fund which supports Albergue ABBA\, a migrant shelter in central Mexico. \nLaura Seltzer-Dunn\, social impact producer for the film\, produces social issue and historical documentaries featuring unsung heroes and the people they help. Laura has produced many stories about migration\, the plight of refugees\, and their efforts to resettle. She is an award-winning PBS documentary and educational filmmaker. With her latest PBS film\, Nobody Wants Us\, about Holocaust refugees\, she has taken outreach and audience engagement to a new level\, creating a robust social impact strategy that includes nonprofit\, film festival\, and university screenings\, as well as the creation of a middle school curriculum.

Mayorkas told the Senate that the greatest domestic threat is homegrown terrorism from “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists\,” specifically white supremacists. Last September\, FBI Director Christopher Wray told a Senate committee that “lone actors” are our greatest threat. The most recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center\, tracking over 1\,600 U.S. hate groups\, states that the extremist ideas mobilizing these groups “now operate more openly in the political mainstream.” \nSo how can we resolve some of this hatred and violence and restore a modicum of civility? \nWe have much to learn from the life story of German-born\, former neo-Nazi TM Garret\, who now lives in Memphis. In a 2021 interview with C-SPAN host Bill Scanian\, he explains why he got involved with white supremacists\, why he turned away\, and how he is now dedicating his life to helping people move out of the rut of hatred.
