DESCRIPTION:The West Linn Alliance is pleased to support the Women’s BIPOC Speaker Series in collaboration with Mary’s Woods\, Respond to Racism\, LO for Love\, West Linn Public Library\, Lake Oswego Public Library\, and African American Women of Lake Oswego. \nThe speaker series kicks off on October 13 at 7:00 pm with Bandana Shrestha\, Director of AARP Oregon. Ms. Shrestha is the new state director for AARP Oregon. She represents the interests of 506\,000 members\, and oversees the work of 7 professional staff and 150 volunteers to advance AARP’s social impact mission for people age 50 and older statewide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis free community event will be held at Mary’s Woods in the Dunn Community Center\, Cascade Hall\, 17520 Mesnard St\, Lake Oswego. \nLive Streaming will also be available courtesy of the West Linn Public Library: https://youtu.be/UPp-Z0GxuJI \nPlease note: There is limited seating available\, and Mary’s Woods requires masks for all guests. \nParking Information: Enter Mary’s Woods campus on Holy Names Drive. DESCRIPTION:The online discussion has been cancelled\, but we encourage you to read the book on your own. \nCeremony by Leslie Marmon Silko\nTayo\, a young Native American\, has been a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II\, and the horrors of captivity have almost eroded his will to survive. His return to the Laguna Pueblo reservation only increases his feeling of estrangement and alienation. While other returning soldiers find easy refuge in alcohol and senseless violence\, Tayo seeks for another kind of comfort and resolution. Tayo’s quest leads him back to Indian traditions\, to beliefs about witchcraft and evil\, and to the ancient stories of his people. The search itself becomes a ritual\, a curative ceremony that defeats the most virulent of afflictions – despair. \nThe West Linn Public Library has copies of the book.
