Mary’s Woods Annual MLK Celebration

January 13 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm UTC+0

Mary’s Woods Annual Martin Luther King celebration will be held on Saturday January 13 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of the Holy Names (17400 Holy Names Drive, Lake Oswego). The guest speaker is Hezekiah Watkins.

On July 7, 1961, at age 13, Hezekiah Watkins was the youngest person arrested in Jackson, Mississippi during the Freedom Rides for a “breach of peace.” He soon found himself on Death Row at Parchman Penitentiary, possibly the worst prison in the United States. Learning from Civil Rights leaders James Bevel, David Dennis and Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, Watkins continued his fight for civil rights and justice in Mississippi while being arrested over 100 times.

Today he works with the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in his hometown of Jackson, bringing awareness that the struggle for justice continues.

Also the NW Freedom Singers will return to this year’s event.
